Email verification for Ghost sign-up forms
Keep fake, mistyped and disposable addresses off your Ghost member list. One line of code checks the email field of your sign-up forms and of the Portal pop-up, suggests a fix for typos and stops addresses that would bounce.
Set up in three steps
- 1
Create a widget key
Create a free MailQuell account, then Developer Hub → Integrations → Form widget → New widget key. Add your site's domain (myblog.com) and copy the line of code it gives you.
- 2
Add the code to Ghost
In Ghost Admin: Settings → Code injection → Site footer. Paste the line and save.
- 3
Publish and test
Open your site, click Subscribe and type an address like [email protected]: a suggestion appears under the field.
The line looks like this (your key is filled in for you in Developer Hub):
<script src="https://mailquell.com/widget/v1.js" data-key="mq_pub_…" data-api="https://api.mailquell.com" defer></script>Good to know
- Checks the sign-up forms of your theme and the Portal pop-up (Subscribe, Sign up).
- If you do not see Code injection, your Ghost(Pro) plan does not include it.
- Add your ghost.io address to the widget key too if visitors also use it.
Never blocks a real visitor
If a check cannot be done in time, or your credits run out, the form is sent as usual.
Checks while they type
The answer is usually there before the visitor reaches the send button.
Your rules
Choose what to refuse (invalid, disposable, risky), your own messages, and a daily limit.
Free to start
200 checks every month + 100 welcome credits. One credit per new address.
Questions
Does it stop spam sign-ups?
It stops addresses that do not exist and temporary inboxes, which is most of what fake sign-ups use. Real addresses typed by bots still get through: combine it with Ghost's own spam protection.
Does it slow my site down?
No. The script is small, loads after the page and only calls MailQuell when a visitor types an email address.
What if MailQuell does not answer?
The form is sent as usual. Visitors are never blocked because of MailQuell: no answer in time, daily limit reached or no credits left all let the form through.
What does it cost?
One credit for each new address checked; the same address again within 24 hours is free. Every account gets free checks each month, and you can set a daily limit on the widget key.
